A hickey (also known as a “love bite”) is a bruise that appears after strong suction on the skin, usually around the neck, shoulders, or other sensitive areas. While it is typically harmless and cosmetic, in some cases, a hickey can have the following effects:
1. Mild – Common Effects
- Bruising and pain: The small blood vessels under the skin break, causing blood to accumulate. This can result in mild pain or tenderness if the area is touched.
- Aesthetic concern: Especially when located on the neck, which is visible, it can be awkward in social or professional settings.
- Misunderstandings: Many people associate hickeys with intimacy, which can lead to false assumptions about relationships or individuals.
2. More Serious Effects (Rare)

- Large blood clots: If the suction is too strong, it can cause deep or widespread bruising, leading to pain and discomfort.
- Damage to blood vessels: In rare cases, a hickey can lead to the formation of a blood clot. There have been extremely rare instances where a blood clot caused by a hickey led to a stroke if it traveled to the brain.
- Infection: If the skin is scratched or if the mouth isn’t clean, bacteria can enter the skin, leading to infection.
3. Psychological – Social Impact
- Embarrassment or awkwardness: Particularly for younger people living with family or in serious work environments, hickeys can cause discomfort or embarrassment.
- Relationship strain: If it’s noticed by someone other than a romantic partner, it can lead to misunderstandings, jealousy, or conflict.
